Design by Bob Cobbing These one-become-two-word poems treat the letters of the alphabet as additivesthat is, substances which, when added in small quantities to second substances, create third ones. In Dutton's minimalist workings the title "Bluebell" inspires the word "peal," to which a t is added to create "petal," this indicated in the body of the poem as "pe(t)al"; "Glue Factory" results in "ste(w)ed," "Reverberations" in "go(i)ng," plus 49 others. The plain typewriter text has been enhanced in stunning xerographic treatments by Britain's master visual poet Bob Cobbing. 5 7/8 x 8 1/4, 56 pp., saddle-stitched, ISBN 0-86162-551-X. In two books of an evolving long poem, Smith explores a range of content and poetic method. Book 1 presents five suites of tongue-toners, exercises to sharpen the mouth and ear. Book 2 centres on language, mystery and love, as two births -- of a child and of language -- are probed. Both books begin with, and research deeply, poetic compositional possibilities, with intriguing, often astonishing, results. Set of 2: $20 |
